The Challenge: Electric Motor Consumption

Induction motors consume over 60% of total electrical energy in the industrial sector. In conventional systems, these motors run at a constant speed (maximum speed), and flow rate or pressure is controlled using mechanical dampers and valves. This is akin to "driving a car with your foot on the accelerator and the brake at the same time"!

What is a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)?

A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), sometimes called a variable speed drive, is an electronic device that precisely controls the speed and torque of an electric motor by varying the frequency and voltage of the power supplied to it, perfectly matching the actual load required by the industrial process.

How Does a VFD Save Energy? (The Affinity Law)

For variable torque applications, such as centrifugal fans and pumps, the "Affinity Law" applies, which states that power consumption is proportional to the cube of the speed.

In other words, if we reduce the motor speed to 80% of its original speed, power consumption will drop to (0.8 x 0.8 x 0.8) = only 51%. Dropping just 20% of the speed saves almost half the electricity bill!
